50,000+ WordPress sites rely on WP Umbrella for safe updates

How does WP Umbrella Safe Updates work?

Never worry about breaking your website with a plugin, theme, or WordPress core update again!

1

Compatibility check

Before starting, we verify that the plugin update is compatible with your WordPress and PHP versions.

2

Restoration point & pre-update screenshot

A backup of the plugin folder is made, allowing for an easy rollback in case of any issues.

3

Plugin update & cache clearing

The plugin will be updated, and your site’s cache will be cleared to properly display changes on your site.

4

Status code verification & post update screenshot

After the update, WP Umbrella checks your site’s status codes to ensure it is live and error-free. It then compares pre- and post-update screenshots for design consistency..

5

Automatic rollback* (optional)

At any moment, if an issue is detected, the site is restored to its previous state. An alert with details is sent via Slack or email.

Pick your update type

TTo update plugins with WP Umbrella, there are three options:
Quick update:Quick update: A standard bulk update method (wp_bulk_upgrade) that skips the creation of a restoration point, and visual regression testing.

Classic Safe Update:The Safe Updates feature automatically checks for compatibility issues before executing plugin updates. It creates a restoration point and monitors the site’s uptime and status codes. If a problem is detected, the update is automatically rolled back.

Advanced Safe Update: Advanced Safe Update: Includes all checks from Classic Safe Update, plus visual regression monitoring to identify any design or layout changes caused by the update. It gives you the option to manually or automatically confirm a rollback.

Visual regression monitoring

Advanced Safe Updates include our Visual Regression Monitoring feature, which ensures your site and its design remain consistent and error-free with every plugin/theme/core update. Screenshots are captured before and after the update and compared pixel by pixel to detect even the smallest visual changes.

If any visual discrepancies are found in the design or layout, you have the option to validate or decline the update depending on the severity of these issues.

Our Uptime and Status Code Monitoring system gives you the peace of mind that your website remains operational and error-free during and after plugin/theme/core updates.

By checking your site's status code after every update, WP Umbrella detects issues like server downtime or HTTP errors immediately. If an error is detected, the update process is halted and rolled back to prevent further issues and ensure your site stays live and accessible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I try WP Umbrella before committing to a subscription?
Yes. You can give WP Umbrella a 14-day test drive for free. No credit card required.
What’s the difference between Classic and Advanced Safe Update?
Classic Safe Update creates a restore point. Advanced Safe Update also includes visual checks for layout issues.
Do you take a full backup before an update?
We only backup the plugin folder when executing Classic of Advanced Safe Update because a full backup isn't necessary before every update. That's because plugin updates only affect the plugin folder in 99.99% of the cases.
Should I always use Advanced Safe Update?
Not necessarily. If the update doesn’t affect your site’s design, Quick or Classic Safe Update is enough. Use Advanced Safe Update for design-related changes.
Can I manually trigger a rollback after an update?
Yes, with Manual Validation in Advanced Safe Update, you can review screenshots and manually roll back if needed.
