The work that compounds

Dear reader,

You’ve reached the end of the book. Most people who start business books don’t finish. The fact that you did says something about you that the rest of us can only guess at.

Here’s what we’d leave you with. Care plans are not glamorous work. Nobody writes case studies about “the agency that ran great backups for ten years.” Except us, maybe. We’d gladly write a case study about that.

The clients you do this work for, in many cases, will not fully understand the value you provide. They will sometimes complain about the price. They will sometimes leave for a $39/mo competitor and come back six months later with a hacked site.

Every site you take on adds to your MRR. Every client you keep teaches you something about the next one. Every SOP you write makes the next year easier than this one. Every contract you sign protects you a little more. Every report you send builds a little more trust.

None of it is dramatic on a Tuesday afternoon. But all of it adds up.

Five years from now, the agencies that took care plans seriously will be running real, profitable, scalable businesses. They’ll be hiring, they’ll be picking their clients, they’ll be sleeping through the night. The agencies that didn’t will still be chasing $5,000 projects, hoping the next one comes in time to cover rent.

That’s the choice. The book is just a map for the first one.

Now go earn that MRR you deserve. You’ve got this.

Yours,

The team at WP Umbrella

Glossary

Every term, in plain English

Definitions of every term in this book that you might want a refresher on.

Anchor tier The middle tier in a three-tier offer, designed to be where most clients land. Built first; the others are designed around it.
Brute-force attack Trying to log in by guessing thousands of password combinations. Most monitoring tools block these automatically.
Care plan A monthly fee a client pays to keep their WordPress site safe, fast, and working. Also called a maintenance plan, support plan, or website retainer.
Churn The rate at which clients leave. Lower churn means clients stay longer, which means more lifetime revenue.
Compromise effect The pattern where, given three choices, most people pick the middle one. Used in tier design.
Cost-plus pricing Pricing based on your costs plus a margin. Useful as a floor — never charge below it.
Discovery call The 30-minute call where you learn about a potential client’s site, business, and needs before sending a proposal.
DKIM An email authentication method that helps prove emails from your site are real, not spoofed.
FTP / SFTP File Transfer Protocol — how you upload files directly to a server. SFTP is the secure version.
Force majeure A contract clause covering events outside your control — natural disasters, internet outages, major provider failures.
Found-issues conversation The onboarding conversation where you tell the client what your audit revealed about their site.
Liability cap A contract clause limiting the amount you can be sued for. Standard practice caps at 12 months of fees paid.
MRR Monthly Recurring Revenue. The total of every recurring dollar coming in each month from active care plans.
Off-site backup A backup stored somewhere other than the website’s own server. Essential — an on-server backup is useless if the server fails.
Productized service A one-time service sold at a fixed price with a fixed deliverable. Like a product, but it’s work.
Proposal A written document outlining your offer for a specific client. More than a quote; less than a contract.
Reactive support Only doing work when the client asks. The opposite of a real care plan, which does the proactive work clients don’t see.
Resolution time The time to fully fix a problem. Different from response time — don’t promise resolution times.
Response time The time to acknowledge a request and begin work. Promise this, not resolution.
SLA Service Level Agreement. A written promise about response time and other commitments.
SOP Standard Operating Procedure. A written, repeatable process for a specific task. Essential for scaling.
Tier A packaged version of your service at a specific price. Most care plans use three tiers.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) An extra layer of login security — typically a code from an app or text in addition to a password.
Uptime The percentage of time a site is online and reachable. 99.9% uptime is about 8.8 hours of downtime per year.
Visual regression Automated screenshots comparing a site before and after a change, flagging visible differences. Catches most update bugs.
XML sitemap A file listing all the pages on a site, used by search engines to find content.
